E&E News: Gianforte Skirts Question on Anti-Public Lands Zealot Pendley’s Future at BLM

Gianforte has said he was “pleased” by Pendley’s nomination, and he’s “optimistic about working with Mr. Pendley to promote Montana’s interests.”

Helena, MT – During Tuesday’s gubernatorial debate, Greg Gianforte continued his pattern of lying and dodging to cover up his atrocious public lands record, this time refusing to condemn William Perry Pendley’s continued tenure as the head of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

In the past, Gianforte has said he was “pleased” by Pendley’s nomination to head the BLM, and said he’s “optimistic about working with Mr. Pendley to promote Montana’s interests.”

So when Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney asked Gianforte to condemn Pendley point-blank, Gianforte couldn’t bring himself to utter one cross word about Pendley, who has argued for all of Montana’s public lands to be sold off.

Gianforte has consistently threatened Montanans’ access to public lands. After suing Montana taxpayers to stop anglers from accessing a popular fishing site on the East Gallatin River, Greg Gianforte wrote legislation in Congress to strip protections from nearly 700,000 acres of public lands — without public input — a move described by conservation advocates as potentially “the single biggest rollback of protected public lands in Montana history.” Gianforte also supports transferring control of federal land, and he opposes buying any new land for state parks or fishing access sites.

“Once again, Greg Gianforte has proven why Montanans simply can’t trust him to protect their access to public lands,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “Rather than using the debate as an opportunity to stand up for Montana’s public lands, Gianforte continued his shameful pattern of jeopardizing public lands access to satisfy his party bosses in Washington D.C.”
