Downing Continues Assault on Affordable Health Care

Helena, MT – Last week, the Supreme Court announced it will hear oral arguments for the partisan lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act the week after the November election.

If the lawsuit is successful:

  • 112,000 Montanans will have their health coverage ripped away;
  • 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions will be vulnerable again to insurance company discrimination;
  • Medicaid expansion, which covers more than 80,000 Montanans, serves as a vital lifeline to rural hospitals, and has expanded access to mental health and substance abuse treatments, will be at risk.

Downing’s opposition to affordable health care is well-established. When discussing the ACA during his failed 2018 bid for U.S. Senate, Downing called it a “disaster” and said, “I would have been a proponent of not repeal or replace, but just repeal.” If the ACA were repealed, health care costs for millions of families across the country, and thousands in Montana, would rise — the opposite of what Downing claims he wants to do as State Insurance Commissioner.

“Montanans need a State Auditor who will stand up for affordable health care — not fight to rip it away,” said MDP Communications Director Nathan Stein. “In the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, Troy Downing’s attacks on affordable health care are unacceptable.”
