Despite Backlash from Montana’s Public Educators, Daines Continues Backing Betsy DeVos

Helena, MT – This weekend, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos refused to say if she was still  considering withholding federal funding from schools that don’t reopen in the fall. DeVos’ comments come despite criticism from public educators in Montana who deemed the decision a continuation of “an unfortunate history of the federal government playing a heavy hand.”

Yet, Senator Steve Daines continues to stand by Betsy DeVos. Daines has served as a loyal footsoldier in DeVos’ anti-public school crusade since casting the deciding vote to confirm her as Secretary of Education in 2017 — after receiving nearly $47,000 in campaign donations from DeVos and her family. Over the course of Daines’ career, he’s received nearly 80,000 from the DeVos family and its corporate PAC.

Daines has supported DeVos even as she’s advocated for a slew of dangerous policies including deregulating for-profit colleges – which are known for preying on veterans and service members – and advocating to gut funding for public education.

“Betsy DeVos poses a threat to the students, educators and schools of Big Sky Country, but don’t expect Steve Daines to stand up to his campaign donor,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Betsy DeVos is woefully unfit to serve as Secretary of Education, and Daines’ complicity in her leadership is just one reason Montanans will send him packing in November.”
