Helena, MT – Yesterday, Senator Steve Daines attended a committee hearing focused on the Trump administration’s botched distribution of COVID-19 relief funds to tribal governments. In the hearing, Daines patted himself on the back for securing aid for Indian Country, failing to mention that he pushed for a pandemic response package without funding for tribal governments, and despite reportedly failing to take action to secure funding “until Democrats pressed” him.
Throughout the pandemic, Steve Daines has failed to stand up for Indian Country – remaining silent as critical funding allocated for tribal governments has been delayed over claims from for-profit corporations.
Instead, Daines has remained focused on helping out his big-business backers, supporting a massive corporate bailout without strong protections to prevent corporations from using federal aid funds to boost CEO bonuses or buy back stocks, and helping Senate Republicans slip a massive tax giveaway for millionaires into must-pass legislation.
“Throughout this pandemic, Steve Daines has failed Indian Country, and now he has the audacity to take credit for securing relief he had to be talked into pushing for,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Daines has kept focused on the interests of the wealthy and well-connected, while tribal governments have been in desperate need of pandemic relief.”
