Daines Silent As Trump Refuses to Commit to Peaceful Transfer of Power After Election

Helena, MT – Yesterday, President Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power after Election Day if he loses – saying he believes the outcome will be decided by the Supreme Court which is why “it’s very important that we have nine justices.” These disturbing comments come as President Trump and his Republican allies in the Senate have moved to rush through a nominee to fill the open seat on the court – despite having delayed needed coronavirus relief for months as Montanans continue to struggle amid the pandemic.

Despite President Trump’s troubling comments which pose a fundamental threat to our democracy, Senator Steve Daines has remained silent. Out for himself, Daines continues marching in lockstep behind his Republican Party bosses as he’s done throughout his time in Washington.

When Trump tear-gassed peaceful protesters demanding an end to police brutality against Black Americans, Daines said he was “thankful for the President’s leadership” and when reports revealed that Trump repeatedly downplayed the threat of the coronavirus despite knowing the virus was extremely dangerous, Daines said the president’s “leadership saved a lot of American lives.”

“President Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power poses a dire threat to our democracy – yet Steve Daines is silent,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Time and time again, Daines kowtows to his party bosses for political power. That’s not the Montana way.”
