Daines Silent as Mitch McConnell Feels No “Urgency” In Passing Another COVID-19 Relief Package

Helena, MT – This week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that while millions of Americans — and more than 80,000 Montanans — are losing their jobs, he and Senate Republicans, including Senator Steve Daines, felt no “urgencyto immediately pass another COVID-19 relief package.

In the face of inaction from Washington politicians like Mitch McConnell, Montanans still need relief, including funding for local governments, and strengthened unemployment insurance benefits as analysts project roughly 50,000 jobs lost this year in Montana. Yet, Daines has proven that he only cares about fighting for his big-business backers by pushing for a corporate slush fund without strong protections to prevent corporations from using federal aid funds to boost CEO bonuses or buy back stocks

“In times of crisis, we need strength and honesty from our leaders — but Steve Daines is too scared to stand up to his party handlers,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “This total disregard for the urgent needs of hardworking Montanans is nothing new from Steve Daines, who called crucial unemployment insurance benefits for Montanans laid off as a result of the crisis ‘generous.’ It’s time they have a Senator who is fighting for them, not his corporate donors.”
