Daines Ignores Indigenous People’s Day But Tries to Take Credit for Securing Indian Country Relief He Slow-Walked

Helena, MT – Yesterday, Senator Steve Daines failed to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but during Saturday’s debate, Daines patted himself on the back again and again for what he claims he’s done for Indian Country during this pandemic.

However, during the debate, Daines failed to mention that he pushed for a pandemic response package without funding for tribal governments. Reporting from that time shows that “[Senators Daines and McSally] didn’t take any action until Democrats pressed them to help in the final 24 hours.”

Instead of fighting from the start for a relief package that provided aid for tribal communities, Daines was hyper-focused on delivering for his big-money backers. Daines pushed for a $500 billion corporate bailout without strong protections to prevent corporations from using federal funds to boost CEO bonuses or buy back stocks, and helped his Republican colleagues slip an enormous tax giveaway for millionaires into a relief bill.

“Throughout this crisis, Steve Daines has failed to stand up for Indian Country – yet he has repeatedly taken credit for securing relief he had to be talked into pushing for,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Instead, Daines has been busy looking out for his corporate donors, not tribal communities.”
