Daines said he had “not found a reason to be against” Pendley and then said he would support him to lead the Bureau, despite his staggering record of opposition to public lands. As acting director, Pendley’s appointment has been opposed by “more than 100 conservation organizations,” including multiple Montana groups.
“As Daines tries to rewrite his record on public lands in an election-year, his continued support of anti-public lands zealots like William Perry Pendley tells the real story,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Pendley has no business running the Bureau of Land Management, and his presence there jeopardizes Montana’s way of life. Daines’ support for Pendley is just further evidence that he is no friend to public lands.”
