From 2015 to 2019, Daines only held a small number of town-hall style events, opting instead for events deemed “orchestrated meetings with supporters,” not “real town halls.” In an event billed as a “meeting with local officials, community leaders, and constituents”, Daines declined to meet with the two-dozen people who had gathered to speak with him, instead choosing to sneak out the back door. When pushing for his legislation to strip protections from hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands, Daines chose to hold meetings with supporters of the effort rather than public meetings.
Montanans have taken note of Daines’ unwillingness to meet with them – some have even gathered in protest to demand town halls. Yet, Daines has repeatedly avoided meeting with Montanans from a variety of perspectives.
“Steve Daines wouldn’t know what Montanans think, since he has hid from them throughout his time in office,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Time and time again, Daines has shirked his responsibility to be a Senator for all Montanans, and instead meets with the hand-selected supporters who agree with him. That’s not the Montana way.”
