Daines’ Claim to Protect Pre-Existing Conditions is “All Dessert, No Vegetables”

Senator has voted 5 times to sabotage the ACA’s protections

Helena, MT – In a new interview with Yellowstone Public Radio, Senator Steve Daines once again tried to sweep his long record of fighting to repeal protections for Montanans with pre-existing conditions under the rug. Asked to square his attempts to repeal the ACA with his rhetoric on protecting Montanans with pre-existing conditions, Daines once again pointed to the PROTECT Act – a sham Republican bill that would do little to protect people with pre-existing conditions” if the partisan lawsuit to repeal the ACA succeeds.

University of Montana economist Bryce Ward called out Daines’ posturing:

It’s all dessert, no vegetables,” Ward says. “If your definition of protect includes ‘Make sure that you’re allowed to get a comprehensive insurance plan at a price that is somewhat similar to what exists under the Affordable Care Act,’ then no, Steve Daines is not ‘protecting pre-existing conditions.’”

Daines has voted 5 times to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and to expand “junk” insurance plans which are not required to cover pre-existing conditions. Daines and his fellow Republicans have yet to offer an alternative to the ACA that wouldn’t reduce current protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

“Yet again, Steve Daines is saying one thing to Montanans, and doing the opposite in Washington,” said MDP Communications Director Nathan Stein. “If Senator Daines had any interest in protecting Montanans with pre-existing conditions, he wouldn’t have voted five times to sabotage their health care. It’s clear Daines is only out for himself and his corporate allies, not Montanans.”
