Daines-Backed Judicial Nominee Opposes Health Care Law That Protects People with Pre-Existing Conditions
Walker “Still Unhappy” with Supreme Court Ruling That Upheld the ACA
Helena, MT – Today, the Senate held a confirmation hearing for judicial nominee Justin Walker, Mitch McConnell’s handpicked protege who is “still unhappy” with the Supreme Court ruling that upheld protections for 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions. Daines voted to confirm Walker for a judicial post last year, despite his receiving a “not qualified” rating from the American Bar Association. The hearing on Walker’s nomination comes on the same day that the Supreme Court accepted opening written briefs in the hyper-partisan lawsuit filed by Republican Attorneys General to overturn the Affordable Care Act.
In addition to his previous vote to confirm the anti-ACA Walker to a federal judgeship, Daines has refused to state where he stands on the Republican lawsuit. Daines has also remained silent as the Trump administration refuses to open a special ACA enrollment period for health coverage in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Daines has long made it clear that he is an enemy of quality, affordable health care — his support for Walker’s anti-health care agenda is only the latest example,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Now more than ever, Montanans need representatives who will fight to defend their held care, not work to tear it down. Yet again, Daines is failing Montana.”
