In a recent interview with Montana Public Radio, Gianforte compared the number of Montanans who have died from COVID-19 to the number that have died in car crashes, revealing once again his fundamental inability to take this virus seriously.
And when asked whether the fact that the United States has four percent of the world’s population but 20 percent of its COVID cases and deaths worries him, Gianforte said, well, this:
“The thing that scares me are politicians in our communities that are not enforcing the rule of law and letting rampant rioting go on. That’s the thing that’s really scary to me. And we see it in Portland, we see it in Wisconsin, Minnesota.”
That’s right – instead of even acknowledging the pandemic, Gianforte pivoted to dogwhistles aimed at stirring up racial animosity.
This isn’t the first instance of Gianforte recklessly downplaying the virus.
Last week, the Associated Press reported that Gianforte attended a concert without a mask that has now been linked to “several” confirmed cases of COVID-19. Despite possible exposure, Gianforte refused to get tested for coronavirus.
And when confronted about his plans for dealing with the pandemic, Gianforte again refused to answer and said “it’s hard to answer hypotheticals about the future.”
“Once again, Greg Gianforte is refusing to even acknowledge a pandemic that has killed more than 270 Montanans,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “This pandemic isn’t a hypothetical, and No Show Greg’s inability to take this public health crisis seriously is nothing short of disqualifying.”
