Cooney Scores Human Rights Campaign Endorsement Over Longtime Opponent of LGBTQ+ Equality, Greg Gianforte

Gianforte has been described as “one of [Montana’s] leading financiers of organizations that… oppose LGBT+ nondiscrimination policies.”

Helena, MT – Today, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney’s campaign for Governor, calling him a “champion for equality.”

Cooney’s opponent – Greg Gianforte – has been described as “one of [Montana’s] leading financiers of organizations that… oppose LGBT+ nondiscrimination policies.” Since 2010, the Gianforte Family Foundation has given more than $1.1 million to the foremost anti-LGBTQ+ organizations in the country – including groups like the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family, which support outlawing homosexuality in the U.S. and gay conversion therapy.

In Bozeman and in Congress, Gianforte has fought hard to defeat legal protections for the LGBTQ+ community. Last year, Gianforte voted against the Equality Actwhich seeks to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity under the Civil Rights Act. In 2014, Greg Gianforte fought on the “front line” of the battle to defeat a nondiscrimination ordinance in Bozeman, personally lobbying city officials to reject the measure which sought to ban discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in housing and employment. Gianforte warned that if the measure passed, Christian businesses would be wary about moving to towns that are “friendly to homosexuals.”

“As a fourth generation Montanan, Mike Cooney knows that all Montanans deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “This November, Montanans will reject Greg Gianforte’s hateful agenda, and elect a true champion for equality, Mike Cooney.”
