Cooney Lays Out Plans to Protect Montanans’ Access to Health Care, While Gianforte Doubles Down on Attempts to Eliminate ACA, Medicaid Expansion

Helena, MT – In response to the recent U.S. Supreme Court vacancy, Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney laid out his plans to protect Montanans’ access to quality, affordable health care in the event that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is overturned and Montana’s Medicaid expansion is eliminated.

Cooney’s opponent, New Jersey millionaire Greg Gianforte, voted in support of the Republican lawsuit seeking to overturn the ACA – which will go before the U.S. Supreme Court one week after the November elections. If successful, the lawsuit would strip health coverage from 112,000 Montanans and remove protections from Montanans with pre-existing conditions – during a public health emergency.

Like Gianforte, the White House has been intent on dismantling the ACA and gutting Medicaid expansion. Now, Greg Gianforte has pledged his support for the upcoming Supreme Court nominee – before one has even been named – who could provide the deciding vote to rip health care coverage away from more than 1-in-10 Montanans.

“As Republicans rush to fill the recent Supreme Court vacancy, Montanans’ access to quality, affordable health care is under threat like never before,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “While Mike Cooney lays out steps to protect Montanans’ care, Greg Gianforte remains dead set on stripping it away – in the middle of a pandemic.”
