Helena, MT – Over the weekend, Senator Steve Daines released a new television ad where he continued to mislead about his record on China and paper over his years of being a “China Cheerleader” with “a lengthier track record than most of not just working with the Chinese government but actively courting senior Communist Party officials.”
Shot: Daines claims he has shown “strong leadership” in holding China accountable amidst the coronavirus crisis.
Chaser: Just a few short weeks ago, Daines praised the Chinese government’s response, saying it “aggressively worked to contain” the virus. These glowing comments came even as American intelligence officials were warning that China was misleading the world about the severity of the crisis.
Shot: Daines claims he is protecting American workers.
Chaser: Daines voted for an amendment that would have capped unemployment benefits for out-of-work Montanans, while at the same time supporting a $500 billion corporate slush fund without adequate oversight.
Shot: The ad claims that Daines is working to bring manufacturing jobs back from China.
Chaser: While Daines was helping set up Procter & Gamble plants in China in the 1990s, the company was closing plants and eliminating thousands of jobs in the U.S.
“In the midst of a crisis, Steve Daines is attempting to shift blame onto China, in order to hide his votes to cap unemployment benefits, against more funding for testing and hospitals, and in favor of a slush fund for his corporate backers,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “That’s not strong leadership, and this dishonesty shows that Montanans can’t trust Steve Daines.”
