‘China Cheerleader’ Daines Has History of Granting Access to State-Run Propaganda Outlets

Helena, MT – Yesterday, the State Department designated four more Chinese news organizations as propaganda agents of the state. Several of the outlets that have been designated so far, including Xinhua and People’s Daily, have covered Senator Steve Daines’ numerous Congressional delegations to China, and the Chinese ambassador’s visit to Montana – during which Daines was dubbed  “China’s ambassador in Congress.” Daines gave an on-camera interview to CGTN, another Chinese media outlet deemed a propaganda arm this year, which has served as a key amplifier of China’s misleading narrative on the coronavirus.

As Daines doubles down on his new tough-on-China talking points, his history of granting access to state-run Chinese media highlights his cozy relationship with the country. Daines has spent years “actively courting senior Communist Party officials” and has been accused of doing the country’s “political bidding” but has recently pivoted to criticizing China – seemingly taking orders from Washington DC consultants who advised shifting blame for Trump’s botched coronavirus response onto the Chinese government.

“Steve Daines giving access to Chinese state-run media is just another example of his close connection to the very country he’s now hammering in his campaign,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Daines hopes his new messaging obscures his long relationship with Communist party officials, but Montanans know better.”
