By Opposing Renewed Unemployment Insurance, Daines Continues Putting the Wealthy Over Workers

Helena, MT – Mitch McConnell doubled down on opposition to extending a $600-a-week boost to unemployment insurance, calling the policy “crazy.” Even though thousands of Montanans have lost their jobs during the coronavirus crisis, Daines is falling in line behind McConnell in opposing these crucial benefits.

Daines previously voted to cap unemployment insurance for Montanans laid off due to the pandemic — but after Democrats succeeded in expanding benefits, Daines was repeatedly caught dishonestly bragging about the increased benefits, before abruptly changing his tune and calling them too “generous.”

“As Montana families confront unprecedented economic challenges during this pandemic, Senator Steve Daines continues to focus on helping his wealthy and well-connected friends,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Daines has worked to secure massive giveaways for his corporate backers, while calling unemployment assistance for his constituents ‘generous.’ Montanans can see Daines’ priorities clearly — help out corporations and the ultra wealthy, and leave hard-working families in the dust.”
