Helena, MT – In a head-spinning reversal from 2016, Senator Steve Daines is rushing to confirm President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court — without even knowing who it is — leaving health care protections for thousands of Montanans hanging in the balance. The oral arguments in the Supreme Court case to repeal the Affordable Care Act are scheduled for November 10th — one week after Election Day — and coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions “may be doomed” if the law is overturned.
The gutting of the ACA could have devastating consequences for Montanans – 112,000 Montanans stand to lose their coverage and 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions could become vulnerable again to insurance company discrimination. Additionally, Montana’s Medicaid expansion – which insures more than 85,000 Montanans, bolsters rural hospitals, and has created thousands of jobs – would be in jeopardy.
“Health care coverage protections for thousands of Montanans are on the line – and Steve Daines is focused on ramming through a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court without even knowing who it will be,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Daines’ ongoing sabotage of the law that provides coverage and key protections for tens of thousands of Montanans shows that he’s only out for himself and his insurance industry donors, not hard-working Montanans.”
