After Supporting Pendley for Months, Daines Claims He’s Suddenly Undecided on Gianforte-Backed William Perry Pendley

Helena, MT – After supporting William Perry Pendley’s nomination for the Bureau of Land Management for months, Senator Steve Daines has now apparently “not made a final decision” on his confirmation vote. This shameless backtracking comes as Daines has recently tried to paint himself as a public lands “champion”  all in a dishonest attempt to paper over his abysmal conservation record now that he’s facing a tough reelection.

Despite Pendley’s avid support for selling off almost all public lands” and his claims that concerns about climate change come from “kooks” who are “preaching fear” Daines stood by Pendley for months, calling the backlash against his leadership “overblown.” Only now  Daines has realized that supporting Pendley would expose his support for public lands as nothing more than a shameless election-year pivot.

Meanwhile, Greg Gianforte claims he’s “pleased” by appointments like Pendley’s, and said he’s “optimistic about working with Mr. Pendley to promote Montana’s interests.”

“William Perry Pendley is a dire threat to the Montana way of life, but Steve Daines and Greg Gianforte have stood by him nonetheless,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Daines sudden attempts to walk back his support for Pendley won’t fool Montanans – he’s just willing to do anything to save his political career.”
