Three Days, and a $29 million State of Disaster Later, Governor Gianforte Is Still Not Home, and Refuses to Answer Questions About Where He’s Been

Helena, MT – Montana has weathered a state of disaster without our Governor, who has been out of the country on a “personal” vacation, in what appears to be Tuscany, for nearly a week while flooding devastated the southwestern part of the state. Governor Gianforte has yet to answer any questions about where he is or why it’s taken him so long to return.

The Montana Democratic Party continues to ask the Governor these very straightforward questions:

  • Why did the Governor try to obscure the fact that Juras is serving as Acting Governor?

  • Who is in charge of Montana’s emergency response?

  • When did Governor Gianforte leave the country? Did he leave after the flooding started?

  • If he was in Europe, why did he choose to stay an additional three days after the state of disaster was called?

“Governor Gianforte owes Montana answers. The FEMA Administrator got to Montana quicker than Montana’s own Governor did,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Our roads, our bridges, our communities have washed away– the Governor couldn’t be bothered to show up, or give his constituents a straightforward answer about when he left and why it’s taken him so long to return. This is a stunning dereliction of duty.”
