After Daines Tried to Ram Through Another GOP Corporate Giveaway, Senate Passes Coronavirus Aid Package With Major Improvements for Montana Hospitals, Tribes & Workers

Senator Daines Voted for $500 Billion Corporate Slush Fund While Supporting Amendment to Limit Unemployment Insurance for Montana Workers

Helena, MT – Last night, thanks to the leadership of Senator Jon Tester and other Senate Democrats, the Senate passed a $2 trillion relief package that provides needed assistance to frontline health care professionals, hospitals, workers, and state, local, and tribal governments. The initial Republican proposal that Senator Steve Daines supported contained a lot of help for corporate executives and shareholders, and not nearly enough for American workers,” hospitals, or local health care systems.

Additionally, Senator Daines voted for an amendment to the final legislation that would have capped unemployment benefits as an “unprecedented” number of Montanans out of work due seek relief to meet basic expenses.“While more still needs to be done to deliver the urgent relief Montanans need, thanks to the leadership of Senator Tester, the aid package passed last night puts working families, tribal communities and health care providers first,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Instead of fighting for Montana families, Senator Daines was ready to support a plan that included a massive slush fund for corporations with little oversight and left Montana hospitals, small businesses, workers, and tribes without the relief they need. Montanans deserve better than a senator whose first priority is not them, but wealthy special interests.”
