Rehberg lawsuit against firefighters fans political sparks

BILLINGS -  A lawsuit filed by Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg and his wife Jan against the city of Billings and the Billings Fire Department is now becoming political ammunition in Rehberg's bid for re-election.

The lawsuit filed last Friday contends property and equipment was damaged at Rehberg Ranch Estates because the fire department breached its duty during a wildfire.  The July 2008 fire burned more than 1,100 acres in the subdivision just north of the Billings Rimrocks.

Monday Democratic Congressional nominee Dennis McDonald said Rehberg's lawsuit will have a chilling effect on fire departments and volunteer firefighters.

"As a volunteer firefighter in Melville, I don't want to have to worry about being sued, when I'm asked to help fight a fire," said McDonald.  "The Billings Fire Department and the heroes who work there should not have to worry about the Rehbergs suing them while they are putting everything they have into doing what's right," McDonald said in a campaign press release.

REHBERG STANDS BY BIG OIL...PART 2

Click here to watch Denny Rehberg speak his mind on offshore drilling.

During the video, Rehberg discusses how offshore drilling doesn't cause negative environmental impacts, saying, "...during the entire Hurricane Katrina, there was not one bit of spillage on the offshore drilling rigs..."

He later adds, "...[the rigs] are so stable..." and "...there was more petroleum leaking naturally out of the earth than could ever leak out of any of the offshore platforms..."

Rep. Rehberg of Montana is Part of Republican Study Committee that Defends BP, Calls the $20 Billion BP Escrow Account a “Chicago-Style Political Shakedown”

June 18, 2010 – Yesterday, as BP CEO Tony Hayward testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about the disastrous irresponsibility of the big oil company that led to the worst environmental disaster in US history, there are some people in Washington who are amazingly defending both Mr. Hayward and BP.

The Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative Members of the House of Representatives, released a statement this week calling the $20 billion BP escrow account a “Chicago-style political shakedown.”  Not a single Republican member denounced this position when it was released.  Not one.

In fact, the Republican industry-friendly approach was echoed by RSC member and the highest ranking member of the committee that oversees the oil industry, Joe Barton (R-Tx), who not only called the BP accountability fund instituted by the President a “shakedown” but went on to apologize to BP and BP CEO Tony Hayward.

BILLINGS - Montana Democrats concluded their platform convention Saturday united behind their goal of electing Dennis McDonald and ousting Republican U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg this fall.

They also emphasized the importance of gaining Democratic majorities in the Montana House and Senate this fall. The House is now tied with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, while Republicans have a 27-23 majority in the Senate.

Montana for McDonald

Congratulations to Congressional Candidate Dennis McDonald, and all our Democratic candidates who celebrated victory on Tuesday.

Dennis is a hardworking Montanan who is fighting for better-paying jobs and affordable health care, not a professional politician--like Denny Rehberg --who votes "No" to projects in Washington and then takes credit for them back home.

Together we can take back our congressional seat and get back to doing what our leaders are elected to do - help Montanans. Visit Dennis’ website at mcdonald4congress.us to learn how to get involved in his campaign.
