Position Overview
The Montana Democratic Party is looking for enthusiastic, politically-minded students for our 2010 fall internship program.
This is a unique opportunity for hardworking, passionate young leaders to gain real life, hands-on experience in Montana Democratic politics, strengthen their understanding of the political process and prepare for future political opportunities.
Interns will participate in the day-to-day operations of the Montana Democratic Party. Tasks will include organizing and maintaining voter information databases, assisting in press operations, event planning, and message research for the 2010 election cycle.
Responsibilities
Internship responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assisting in building and organizing Democratic Party Events from start to finish, including: requesting catering bids and handling registration requests.
Analyzing and distilling information from THOMAS.gov and the Montana Democratic Party’s internal database of State Legislative votes to help create arguments and narratives for the 2010 Election Cycle for both Federal and State offices.
Assist the Montana Democratic Party’s Communications Director in:
o Archiving research and press material
o Writing and assisting in placement of Letters to the Editor, re: issue/legislative priorities
o Tracking media (both conventional and new media sources)
o Assist with outreach to small news outlets (radios, local newspapers, tvs, and MT blogs)
Assist in maintaining and using the Montana Democratic Party’s information databases, including:
o The 300,000+ people Voter Access Network (VAN) used by all Democratic Central Committees in the United States, including all 50 State Parties and the Democratic National Committee.
o The 50,000+ contact Database National Geographic & Political Software (NGP) used by an increasing number of Democratic and progressive groups in the United States including Obama for America.
o The Montana Democratic Party’s 10,000+ email address database and bulk email system (iContact) used by a number of Fortune 500 companies.
Learning Opportunities:
- Understand preparation work involved in a political campaign.
- Learn how political fundraisers are planned, conducted and implemented.
- Learn how to use software that will be useful in future political positions.
- Learn communications processes/tools/strategies.
- Learn through extensive use of THOMAS.gov and state legislative voting records.
- Learn how to use a content management website.
Compensation and Hours
- Unpaid internship for a maximum of 10 hours a week.
- Intern will arrange a regular, scheduled time for office work.
- Intern will keep track of time worked and complete a time sheet on the 1st and 15th of every month.
- Any intern accepted into the MDP Intern Program will sign a confidentiality agreement.
